Seeing the doctor
Appointments
All surgeries at Cartmel are by appointment only and you can make an appointment by telephone (015395 36366) or by calling in to the surgery.
For urgent conditions, we will always try to fit you into the next possible surgery.
You can now order your prescriptions and book doctors appointments online. Ask at Reception for a PIN number. Further details are available on our Notices page.
Address, phone, mobile and email
If you are happy for us to contact you by email or mobile phone, please make sure that we have up-to-date records of these. If you would rather we didn't leave any messages, please let the reception staff know.
Would you like a Chaperone?
When attending the doctor or nurse for some examinations or tests you may prefer to have a chaperone present. Please let our receptionists know if you would like a chaperone. We can give you the following choices.
- We can rearrange your appointment so that you can be seen by a doctor of the same sex.
- You may bring a friend or relative of your choice with you.
- We can arrange for another nurse or doctor to be present during your examination.
- One of the receptionists can be present, behind a screen, in the consulting room.
Extended access
The surgery is open for late appointments on the last Tuesday of each month. This is a surgery for patients who can genuinely not attend normal surgery hours. The surgery runs from 6.30pm – 7.30pm and is by appointment only.
Out of Hours Service
If you need urgent medical attention when the surgery is closed, emergency care is now provided by Cumbria Health on Call (CHoC) (formerly BayCall) based at Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.
The new patient helpline is 03000 247 247
(Hearing impaired users who need to contact CHoC please call (Typetalk) 18001 03000 247 247)

Home Visits
Home visits are for people who are house-bound or those people who are too ill to attend the surgery.
Please make requests for home visits before 10.30am if possible.
Please remember that house calls are time consuming and the Doctor can see four patients in the time taken to visit a patient at home.
Telephone consultations
Telephone consultations with the Doctor may be possible if you phone at the end of morning surgery between 12–12.30pm. It is also possible to have a telephone consultation with the nurse if required. Please phone reception for more information.
Test results
For test results, please phone the surgery after 2pm. For blood tests and Xray results, please allow 7 days for these results – some tests may take even longer.
Holiday-makers
We will be happy to see any relatives or friends staying with you who become unwell. We appreciate that it can be very distressing to feel unwell when away from home. Please phone and make an appointment.
